Our Mission

We’re on a mission to help Grand Rapidians build 4,261 accessory dwelling units (ADUs). According to the 2020 Decennial Census, Grand Rapids had 85,288 housing units. Our target is rooted in the idea that around 5% of homeowners would be interested—and if you’re reading this, chances are you’re one of those people Steve Jobs was referring to in his famous quote!

Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Why This Matters

In the decade leading up to 2024, only eight ADUs were built in GR. Strict zoning laws made construction an uphill battle. However, thanks to the 2024 zoning ordinance amendments, ADUs are now allowed by right, and eight permits were issued in the very next year. While building as many in one year as in the prior decade represents progress, there’s still a long way to go.

Of the eight permitted, two belong to one of our co-founders. Inspired by his involvement in the advocacy work of StrongTownsGR and his firsthand experience in walkable, dense communities, he came to appreciate the transformative power of “thickening up” GR’s urban fabric. He might be a self-proclaimed nerd who reads research papers and zoning ordinances for fun, but his passion for housing solutions is what drives MI Backyard Build—and we’re here to simplify the process for you.
